Ready to recover from the holidays?  How about boosting your immune system during the winter months?  Juicing is an opportunity to take advantage of disease-fighting compounds in our food.  This class will cover the benefits and basics of juicing and the importance of juicing with fresh, organic ingredients.  This class is free with required registration by contacting the service desk at Whole Foods Cooperative at 814-456-0282 or emailing outreach@wfcerie.coop.

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, lower limb amputations, and blindness and a major cause of heart disease and stroke. Approximately 90 to 95 percent of diagnosed diabetes cases are type 2. Risk factors for type 2 diabetes are age, overweight, inactivity, hypertension, family history, race, and gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Approximately 24% of people with diabetes are undiagnosed. In Erie County, diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death for the years 2012-2014. Among age groups, the highest percentage was 28% for age group 65 and above. 
The percentage of diabetes among adults was 10% in the Erie City Area geographic area and 14% for the Rest of Erie County geographic area. 


​​"Until recently, young children and teens almost never got type 2 diabetes, which is why it used to be called adult-onset diabetes," per the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The most recent statistics estimate that prediabetes is 18% among adolescents between ages of 12 and 18 and up to 24% in young people ages 19 to 34.  Unfortunately, these numbers have been rising steadily over the past decade. 

Food for Life is an award-winning nutrition education and cooking class program that provides new information and skills to empower people who have diabetes, those concerned about developing diabetes, and their families.  This class offers a cooking demonstration of delicious, health-promoting dishes, along with a take-home packet of easy and affordable recipes.  Reservations are required by clicking the button or by calling 814-746-6381.
